PH8: What Is a Payline and How Do Ways-to-Win Slots Differ?

What is a payline? Signal first: it is the route on the reels where a match has to sit before anything pays. Signal is the line or ways figure on the info screen. Noise is the claim that more lines means better odds.
What Is a Payline in a Slot?
A payline is a fixed route across the reel window: straight across, a V, a zigzag. Symbols that match along the route pay, and symbols that match off it do not. A one-line slot has a single route, so a win needs the match on that one row.
JILI’s pages show the range clearly.
| JILI slot | Line or ways figure printed |
|---|---|
| Money Coming | 1 line |
| Crazy 777 | 1 payline |
| Boxing King | 88 paylines |
| Super Ace | 1024 ways |
| Golden Empire | 32400 megaways |
The move: find this figure first on any slot’s info screen, since it decides how a win is counted.
PH8 Paylines Versus Ways to Win
A ways slot does not draw routes. What counts is a match carried reel to reel from the left, on whatever row. Five reels holding 4 symbols each multiply out to 1024 ways (4 to the fifth power), which is the Super Ace figure on JILI’s page.
Megaways reels show a different symbol count every spin, and the ways figure moves with them. Golden Empire’s page prints 32400 as its figure.
PG Soft gives Mahjong Ways 4 rows over 5 reels; in Mahjong Ways 2, the middle trio of reels (2, 3, 4) each carry a fifth row. Lucky Neko is 6-reel and 5-row. These are grid shapes, and PG Soft’s pages print the RTP beside them.
Paylines in Fish Games
Fishing games have no paylines at all. Mega Fishing, filed by JILI under fish and arcade, prints zero paylines. A shot is the stake, and a target’s own value is the win.
Red Flags to Watch For
- A page that says more paylines raise the return. Lines alter the counting of a win; the studio’s RTP stays where it is.
- A site quoting an RTP for a JILI slot. JILI prints none.
- A line count that disagrees with the in-game info screen.
- A ways figure given without the reel layout that produces it.
If a number does not match the info screen, trust the screen.
Counting a Win on a Line
Take a slot with 5 reels and a straight middle payline. Three matching symbols from the left on that row pay. The same three symbols on the top row do not, unless another payline runs there.
Ways slots remove that restriction. Three adjacent reels with a matching symbol in any row pay, and each extra copy on a reel multiplies the ways.

How to Get Started
-
Read the info screen for lines or ways
A fixed-line slot prints a number of paylines. A ways slot prints ways or megaways instead.
-
Check how the stake relates to lines
In some games the stake covers every line. In others you pick how many lines are active.
-
Read the win rule
Left-to-right adjacent matches pay on most ways games. Scatter wins may pay anywhere.
